Responsibilities:
Under the supervision of the Director of Nursing, the Certified Medical Assistant performs clinical and administrative duties as part of the clinical care team; helps keep health care services in the clinic setting running smoothly.
Essential Duties and responsibilities include the following:
- Conduct pre-visit planning by reviewing and updating patient charts prior to appointment with recent test results and correspondence and determines needed services per practice protocol.
- Confer with provider regarding any incomplete patient tests/consults or other incomplete orders prior to patient visit.
- Prepare patient for examination and treatment by escorting them from the waiting area to the exam room and providing them with a patient gown.
- Interview patients to obtain medical information and measures their vital signs, height and weight.
- Record patients’ medical history, vital statistics and other information in the medical record.
- Prepare and administer medications, including injections and immunizations, as directed by the provider.
- Collect blood or other laboratory specimens, log the specimens and prepare them for testing as necessary.
- Explain treatment procedures, medications, diets and provider’s instructions to patients.
- Help provider examine and treat patients, handing them instruments and materials or performing such tasks as removing sutures
- Support patient care delivery by authorizing drug refills as directed; telephoning prescriptions to the pharmacies; contacting medical facilities or departments to schedule patients for admission, testing or procedures.
- Assist the nurse in referring patient to specialists and/or diagnostic testing in accordance to referral protocols and as directed by the provider
- Will respond to emergency/disaster situations in accordance to the Emergency Preparedness Plan and provide immediate assistance and first aid as directed by the Supervisor.
- Assist with ECGs, OB/GYN exams and office procedures as needed; and provide other patient care services as directed by the provider.
- Clean and sterilize instruments and disposes of contaminated supplies.
- Prepare and maintain clinical supplies by inventorying stock; placing orders; verifying receipt.
- Keep equipment operating by following operating instructions, troubleshooting breakdown or calling for repairs
- Prepare, clean and maintain exam and treatment rooms.
- Assist the provider in the transfer of patient to the hospital by activating the emergency response number (911); ensure family is notified of the disposition of the patient
- Discharge patients as directed by the provider ensuring that the patient receives and is instructed on the Plan of Care and provided any additional information
- Assist the clinical team in responding to medical emergencies in the clinic by bringing emergency equipment to the site of the emergency, providing CPR as necessary and/or contacting family or 911 as directed by the provider or nurse
- Will respond to emergency/disaster situations in accordance to the Emergency Preparedness Plan and assist the provider and/or in providing immediate medical assistance such as first aid as directed
- Employee must maintain confidentiality, security and integrity of patient data and information according to privacy regulations, including HIPAA.
- Employee assures age and culturally appropriate, holistic patient care based on mission, standards and policies; adheres to standards of relevant regulatory agencies.
- Employee must consistently be courteous to patient, staff and visitors.
- Employee participates in clinic performance improvement activities to measure, assess and improve the quality of patient care.
- Other work-related duties as assigned by immediate supervisor.
Knowledge, skills and abilities for the position:
- Required to complete basic mathematical computations as related to medications.
- The medical assistant must demonstrate ability to solve problems and deal with a variety of issues; ability to interpret and provide instructions furnished in written, verbal, diagram or schedule form. Under limited direct supervision, makes decisions that directly affect patient well-being and comfort with high consequence of error.
- The medical assistant must have the ability to use good reasoning and judgment and react calmly in emergency situations.
- Language & Communication: Ability to read, write, speak and understand English, and communicate effectively with others.
- Ability to understand and follow written and verbal direction.
- Attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to manage and maintain security of confidential data and information.
- Cultural awareness of and sensitivity to Kickapoo traditions, religious beliefs and way of life.
Supervision exercised:
This position does not carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.
Education/experience requirements:
Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma and completion of an accredited medical assisting program is required. Two-years’ experience in a clinic or physician office setting.
Preferred Qualifications: Certification as a Medical Assistant (CMA) and previous work-related experience is preferred.
