Job Description

Position:                              Small Equipment Mechanic          

Supervisor:                         Maintenance Manager       

Division:                              Tribal Reservation Services Administration

Department:                       Tribal Maintenance


Responsibilities include diagnosing small engine problems, maintaining shop area cleanliness, and collecting and disposing of trash. Observe all safety and security procedures, report potentially unsafe conditions, and use equipment and materials properly.

Essential Duties and responsibilities include the following:

  • Small engine mechanics regularly work on power equipment ranging from lawn mower, edge trimmer, pole saw, weed eaters, blowers, tractors and chainsaws.
  • When equipment breaks down, mechanics use strategies determine mechanical, electrical, and fuel problems and make necessary repairs.
  • Mechanics tasks vary in complexity and difficulty.
  • Small engine mechanic inspections and repairs, involve minor adjustments or the replacement of a single part.
  • Perform routine engine maintenance, such as lubricating parts and replacing spark plugs.
  • Test and inspect engines for malfunctioning parts.
  • Repair or replace worn, defective, or broken parts
  • Reassemble and reinstall components and engines following repairs
  • Keep records of inspection, test results, work performed and parts used
  • Perform such other tasks as may be assigned from time to time by supervisor.

Education/experience requirements:

Minimum Qualifications: One to Three years of experience in small engine equipment must be familiar with engine components and systems and know how they interact with each other. They often disassemble major parts for repairs; they must be able to put them back together properly.

Preferred Qualifications: High school diploma or graduation equivalent diploma (GED)
