Position: Grants Specialist

Responsibilities:
The Grants Specialist, under the supervision of the Grants Manager, is responsible for researching and finding available funding opportunities for the Tribe; will recommend funding opportunities to Tribal Administration; and will work closely with department managers/directors in preparing and submitting applications for funding including drafting the project narratives as well as verifying the budget proposal for the grant application. The Grants Specialist will also assist the Grants Accountant in performing the accounting and financial service functions for programs funded by grants or special revenue. These functions include assisting in preparing financial projections and budgets, actual vs. budget reporting, reviewing/monitoring of individual grants and transactions for compliance with private, local, state and federal fund requirements, billing and collections, journal entries, and financial grant reporting including preparation of reports for granting authorities and departments.
Essential Duties and responsibilities include the following:
- Researches and recommends grants appropriate and applicable for the needs of the Tribe.
- Prepares, writes, and submits grant applications including drafting the project narrative, budget, and other documentation in a timely manner to meet grant application deadlines.
- Gathers, organizes, summarizes and compiles a variety of data and statistics to identify the needs of the Tribe.
- Plans, organizes, and coordinates the accounting and financial reporting for assigned grant portfolio, including preparing annual and project budgets, forecasting revenue, estimating any carry-over of funds from one year to the next.
- Research issues, prepares invoices/ billings and collects funds for the support of restricted fund expenditures.
- Prepares or assists in the preparation of all applicable fiscal reports for sponsored programs and ensures the timely submission thereof.
- Coordinates with key personnel at all levels to support proper and timely expenditure of grant funds in compliance with applicable guidelines and budget deadlines.
- Develops positive working relationships to foster a collaborative environment for grant coordination and oversight.
- Attends professional development training and stay abreast of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) Circulars and their applicability to grant management related to audit, federal regulations, state laws and internal policies, and any workshops or seminars on grants or special revenues.
- Compiles year-end reports (SEFA), work papers and analysis necessary for the external auditors to complete the yearly audit of the grants.
- Perform such other tasks as may be assigned from time to time by the Grants Manager.
Education/experience requirements:
Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, Business Administration or a related field with at least one year of general accounting experience or equivalent experience managing grants.
Or
Five years of general accounting experience or equivalent experience managing grants. This should include processing complex financial transactions, ensuring compliance with legal or contractual requirements, recordkeeping and preparation of monthly, quarterly and/ or annual reporting. Government financial audit experience.
Preferred Qualifications: Previous work-related experience is preferred.
